10 Free, Reciprocal & Discount Museum Programs and Resources

As spring arrives in full force in most parts of the US (unfortunately, for some of us snow is still on the ground!), we are reminded that summer will be here before long. If you are in the midst of planning your summer travels, consider some of the free, reciprocal and discount museum programs and resources listed below that will help save you money on multiple museum visits, especially if you are traveling outside your hometown.

Reciprocal Museums and other Discount Programs

The North American Reciprocal Museum Association - The North American Reciprocal Museum (NARM) Association is an affiliation of arts and cultural institutions across North America. Individuals who join a participating NARM institution can receive free admission/discounts at over 650 institutions.

Association of Science - Technology Centers, Passport Program - Visit a science center or museum—for free! Join the savviest of science-loving families and adults and get free admission at science centers and museums around the world. How? First join your local participating science center or museum. Then check the ASTC Passport Program list to find other participating museums—now more than 300 in over a dozen countries. Then get ready to go!

The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass Series - A pass is your ticket to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites. Each pass covers entrance fees at national parks and national wildlife refuges as well as standard amenity fees at national forests and grasslands, and at lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management and Bureau of Reclamation. A pass covers entrance and standard amenity fees for a driver and all passengers in a personal vehicle at per vehicle fee areas (or up to four adults at sites that charge per person). Children age 15 or under are admitted free.

Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Reciprocal Admissions Program - One of the benefits of becoming a member of your local AZA-accredited zoo or aquarium is free or discounted admission to the nearly 150 AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums that participate in the AZA Reciprocal Admissions Program.

American Horticultural Society, Reciprocal Admissions Program - A current membership card from the American Horticultural Society or a participating garden entitles you to special admission privileges and discounts at nearly 300 gardens.

Association of Children's Museums, Reciprocal Program - The ACM Reciprocal Program is a voluntary network of ACM member museums open across the U.S. and Canada that reciprocate discounted admission to one another's members that hold premium family memberships. Nearly 200 museums participate in the network and reciprocate 50% off general admission for up to six (6) people.

Museum Day Live - In the spirit of Smithsonian Museums, who offer free admission everyday, Museum Day Live! is an annual event hosted by Smithsonian magazine in which participating museums across the country open their doors to anyone presenting a Museum Day Ticket...for free. Only an official Museum Day Live! ticket (download online) is eligible for free entry. Over 1500 museums participated in 2012.

Museums on Us - Your Bank of America or Merrill Lynch Card gets each cardholder one free general admission to over 150 museums nationwide on the first full weekend of the month.

Target Days - List of free and reduced-price Target events across the US.

AMAZING RACE SEASON 22 EPISODE 6 LOCATION RECAP - BOTSWANA

Amazing racers took a long flight from Vietnam to Botswana in Episode 6 of The Amazing Race, Season 22. The raw and vast beauty of Africa made this one of my favorite episodes. Teams were helped by bushmen and dug for scorpions, set snare traps, and made fire from sticks. Makgadikgadi Pans National Park was the setting of this episode and teams checked into the pitstop at Meno A Kwena Safari Camp. African safaris occupy the top of many bucket-lists and mine is no exception. There are numerous safari options in Africa but, specific to Botswana, start learning and planning your own trip through the following resources - it's hard not to be inspired by the beauty of Botswana!

ARNDT INSPIRED TRAVEL

Many in the travel community know of world traveler Gary Arndt and later you'll learn about Gary's doppelganger (with only the positive definitions of the word intended!) of sorts, Garry Arndt. For those who don't know Gary...he explains on his website, "In 2007 I sold my house and have been traveling around the world ever since." In fact, Gary's travels are amazing and quite unbelievable. He has visited all seven continents, over 116 countries and territories, all 50 US states, nine of the Canadian provinces, every Australian state and territory, over 125 US National Park Service sites, and over 180 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Wow! Gary is in the uber-traveler category with few fellow passengers. As of this publication date, Gary is currently on an extended visit to Germany where he is visiting 27 UNESCO sites.

Gary's gift to the rest of us (who dream of traveling to just a fraction of the places he has visited) is his travel blog and website, appropriately titled everything-everywhere.com. Through his stories, beautiful pictures, travel tips, and insights, Gary lets us accompany him on his journey. From crossing the Arctic Circle to swimming with jellyfish in Palau, his travel experiences are captivating. I'd be remiss not to admit that a bit of travel envy flows through my veins when reading about Gary's adventures. But that's the point; Gary inspires travel. Gary inspires exploring and learning about the world around us. In his own way, Gary has single handedly been our remote tour guide and we thank him for sharing his journey with us. You can also catch Gary on "This Week in Travel" podcast with regular co-hosts Chris Christensen (amateurtraveler.com) and Jen Leo (Los Angeles Times).

An uber-traveler in his own right, I'd like to introduce you to Travel Goal Getter Member Garry Arndt. Garry, an Air Force Vietnam Veteran, has visited all 50 US States, over 30 countries, and five continents. Thanks in part to his military service, Garry has been to some very difficult, if not impossible, to reach places including Wake Island, Midway Island, and Ascension Island. Additional notable visits include Iran, Pakistan, Cuba, Greenland, Bahrain, Libya, Malta, Senegal, and Ethiopia.

Garry currently focuses his travels in the US and likes to visit unique places such as the "largest things," museums of interest, factory tours, Vietnam Memorials, and historic and natural parks. He has been gracious to share many photos and stories of his journeys with Travel Goal Getter and we are thankful to have him as one of the most active members of our community. We also thank Garry for his sacrifice and service to our country.

Whether you travel like Gary or Garry, there are endless places to explore and opportunities to learn about the world around you (it doesn't always take a plane ride to get there either!). AMAZING RACE SEASON 22 EPISODE 3 LOCATION RECAP - NEW ZEALAND

Amazing racers departed Bora-Bora for New Zealand. First impressions of New Zealand? Pure beauty! It is evident that outdoor activities are plentiful in New Zealand and teams were first treated to a jet-boat adventure. There are numerous jet-boat options available and this New Zealand jet-boat resource is a good start for connecting with some outfits in Queenstown, Canterbury, Buller & Makarora regions in the South Island and the Rangitaiki, Whanganui and Waikato Rivers in the North Island.

Teams also participated in some Shemozzle obstacle course activities. If you are wondering what in the world Shemozzle is, the Shepherd's Shemozzle is part of the annual Hunterville Huntaway Festival which in years past has seen competitors swallowing raw eggs, munching on dry weetbix washed down with a can of warm beer, huhu bugs with cold cooking oil or a sheep's eye and cream. This is definitely a spectator sport for me! Teams checked into the pit stop at the picturesque luxury resort Terrace Downs located in Canterbury.

THE MOST UNDERRATED TRAVEL NECESSITY? WHAT'S YOURS?

That sinking feeling - "I lost my sunglasses!"

We've all done it; hands to the head, collar, and pockets frantically searching for a pair of misplaced or forgotten sunglasses It begs the question; are sunglasses quite possibly the most underrated travel necessity? For comfort reasons alone (the prevention of sun- glare-induced headaches comes to mind), it's nearly impossible to travel without them. When forgotten, it makes going outside on a sunny day almost unbearable. Frankly, I don't know how people enjoyed the outdoors and the world's beautiful places before the invention and mass accessibility of sunglasses. Maybe the sun was dimmer. Maybe there were more clouds. Maybe everyone wore hats. Maybe squinting and those lines around your eyes as a result of squinting was accepted as part of the normal premature aging process. What is known, is that at this very moment, a traveler somewhere in the world is either dumping their backpack in an attempt to find their lost pair, asking the front desk for a giveaway "lost and found" pair, or seeking out the nearest corner shop, vendor cart, or any place that sells anything (I've even seen sunglasses for sale at a restaurant) in search of a pair of replacement sunglasses. That's the good news; your travels can go on. You trip will only be derailed for as long as it takes to find another pair - and that shouldn't take long.

If not sunglasses, what is your most underrated travel necessity?

I thought about sunglasses as my most underrated travel necessity after listening to a representative from Haber Vision on a local outdoor radio show. They have a large variety of sunglasses available for different types of outdoor activities and they have a money back fit and satisfaction guarantee. I'm typically a dollar store sunglasses buyer but I'll give Haber Vision a try (I really do need a pair of quality sunglasses) next time my sunglasses break - it shouldn't take long!

AMAZING RACE SEASON 22 EPISODE 1 LOCATION RECAP - BORA-BORA

This year we will recap Amazing Race Season 22 locations and activities. The first leg had the amazing racers traveling to Bora-Bora. What a beautiful place to start Amazing Race Season 22!

From wikipedia...Bora Bora is an island in the Leeward group of the Society Islands of French Polynesia, an overseas collectivity of France in the Pacific Ocean. The island, located about 230 km (140 mi) northwest of Papeete, is surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef. In the centre of the island are the remnants of an extinct volcano rising to two peaks, Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu, the highest point at 727 m (2,385 ft). Bora Bora is a major international tourist destination, famous for its aqua-centric luxury resorts. The major settlement, Vaitape, is on the western side of the main island, opposite the main channel into the lagoon. Produce of the island is mostly limited to what can be obtained from the sea and the plentiful coconut trees, which were historically of economic importance for copra. According to a census performed in 2008, the permanent population of Bora Bora is 8,880.

In Bora-Bora, Amazing race teams skydived out of a helicopter. Skydiving options on Bora-Bora seem to be limited to one or maybe two companies, one of which is Skydive Tahiti. One of the other activities that teams did was search through sand castles on the beach. "My wife and I took a vacation to what has been called by travel experts as the "most beautiful place in the world." Ten wonderful days in Tahiti, in French Polynesia in the South Pacific. I have been to 49 of 50 states, visited 24 countries on 6 of 7 continents, but nothing compared to exotic Tahiti and the lush green tropical islands and crystal blue waters. The driving force why we went to Tahiti was my wife. While at the Polynesian Cultural Center in Hawaii the year before, she heard the beat of the Tahitian drums and knew right then we had to visit Tahiti. The drums did it!! On the main island of Tahiti, we walked the entire city until we located the best jewelry store and my wife purchased a pearl that was actually recovered by a Tahitian diver in the waters nearby. A jeweler friend back in Ohio mounted it for her into a ring surrounded by diamonds. Moorea was even more beautiful. With no TV, radio or newspapers, we enjoyed the quiet of our private cottage right on Cook's Bay, and swam in the waters and paddled an outrigger in the Bay. There were more stars at night than you can imagine. We were half way around the world, and the 10 magnificent days seemed like we left earth. It was the best vacation in our lives to the "most beautiful place in the world." Just seeing French Polynesia made us believe there is truly a paradise on earth, and not just on the Travel Channel."

VISITING AMERICA'S LARGEST - CREATING MEMORIES

Across the world and the United States, there is a competition to be the largest. The largest of anything and everything. We have compiled a list of claims of the largest items - from the largest boll weevil to the largest rocking chair. Plan your trip as a “Largest Adventure” or, just stop and see a "largest" along the way. How many largest things have you seen?

Most people would admit that you can’t compare these sights with – let’s say – the raw beauty of the Grand Canyon or the history of Plymouth Rock. However, the sights can add a little excitement to an otherwise long drive. My favorite “largest” memory is driving across Texas on I-20 on New Year’s Eve. This was not how we wanted to spend New Year’s Eve, but we needed to make up some time on the road. Most things to visit along the road were closed. That is, until we found the giant jackrabbit in Odessa, Texas in one of our tour books. It took us a little while to find this giant jackrabbit – as the directions to these sights aren't always so precise.

As it turns out, the giant 25 foot rabbit we imagined ended up being 8 feet tall. We all got out of the car, posed with the rabbit for a picture, made some New Year’s racket, and got back in. We saw many other things on that trip – some incredible things – but one of our favorite memories is <groan> ”I can’t believe we went and saw that Jackrabbit!” Travel is about creating memories that last well beyond the end of the trip.
